City of Alexandria’s T.C. Williams High School Debate Team is Making Moves; Debate is Back

Alexandria, VA – The T.C. Williams Debate Team is as strong as ever.  Approximately 10 students are meeting at least once a week to study persuasive speaking, learn study and research skills, and debate pressing social issues.  They are lead by a great coaching staff: Nick J. Sciullo, a local government affairs professional and consultant, and Mary Downs, Ph.D. and Michelle Christensen, both of Alexandria City Public Schools.

For years debate has been an important after school activity for many high school students across the Commonwealth, and now Alexandria’s historic high school is embracing the strong tradition of extracurricular interscholastic debate.  Debate teaches students public speaking skills, advocacy, self-esteem, research skills, and supports classroom learning.  This year marks the beginning of a strong commitment to continued debate success at T.C. Williams.

The Debate Team has competed in two tournaments this year and plans to attend the George Mason University Patriot High School Tournament in January 2008.  T.C. Williams High School participates in the Northern Virginia Forensic League.

The Debate Team has enlisted the help of Nick J. Sciullo Consulting, LLC to establish the T.C. Williams Debate Society, a non-profit booster club for the Debate Team:

“The T.C. Williams Debate Society believes in the educational, civic, and societal benefits of competitive debate.  The society believes that interscholastic debate can develop advocacy skills, self esteem, creativity, and research skills, which are applicable across a wide variety of situations.”

The T.C. Williams will continue to practice and compete through the school year.  The Debate Team hopes to become an important part of the community, encouraging involvement of parents, students, and community members at-large.
